I am Associate Professor of Political Science at Yale University. I study political accountability, state building and the politics of development, with a regional focus on sub-Saharan Africa. I am the author of  the book The Paradox of Traditional Chiefs in Democratic Africa (New York: Cambridge University Press, 2016) and the book manuscript Democracy’s Devout Defenders: Churches, Education and Liberal Democracy in sub-Saharan Africa (currently under contract with Cambridge University Press). My current research projects analyze politics in weak states, examining how non-state actors – such as traditional leaders, churches and NGOs – interact with the national state to affect development and democracy. My research has received numerous awards, including the Gaddis Smith International Book Prize and the prize for the best article published in the previous volume of the American Journal of Political Science.

My CV is available here. My google scholar page is here.
